The Institutionalization of Special Advisers in the United Kingdom’s Government

The article analyses the institutionalization of the role of special advisers in the United Kingdom’s government. The paper draws a profile of the role of special advisers, dentifying their functions and relationships with other institutions such as the Prime Minister, ministers and civil servants. The article analyses the reasons for the increasing importance of special advisers in the political order of the Cabinet government system and in the policymaking processes of central government. Finally, the potentially problematic aspects are noted.
